Biomecanics in Morocco: shoes built for first steps

Biomecanics was born from a collaboration between Spanish shoemaker Garvalín and the Valencia Institute of Biomechanics (IBV), a university research centre specialising in human movement. Why an ergonomic shoe matters

A child's foot is not a miniature adult foot. Until around age five or six it is still largely cartilage and deforms easily. A shoe that is too rigid, too narrow or too thickly soled interferes with arch development and distorts the way a child walks.

Getting the size right, the part that matters most

Sizing is the number one reason shoes bought online get exchanged. Here is the reliable method:

1. Measure the foot, not the shoe. Place a sheet of paper against a wall, have your child stand with their heel against the wall and their weight on the foot. Mark the tip of the big toe and measure in centimetres.

2. Add 10 to 12 mm. This is the allowance for growth and for the foot rolling through each step. Less and the shoe will be too tight within a month; more and your child will slide around and trip.

3. Measure both feet and use the larger one. A few millimetres of difference between feet is normal.

4. Measure at the end of the day, when the foot is slightly swollen.

Children change shoe size roughly every 3 to 4 months before age three, then every 4 to 6 months. Check regularly: children almost never complain that a shoe is too small.
